Every Day a new task, today "Dry Apples"

All set to peel and slice...Go! The little gadget worked pretty good once i got the hang of it...I bought it year before Cecil and I got sick...and it's been waiting patiently for me every since...I wanted to get it going before I forgot how useful tools can be for the job of peeling..the old hands don't bend like they use to, and it saves me a lot of time and effort...First peel on machine and put into water ( this time I added lemon juice).Rinsed in clear water.and then I sprinkled them with cinnamon and sugar..and put them on the trays for the Dehydrator to dry for  a couple of hours..I could have taken a picture of the prettiest tray..but by this time I had gotten tired. I can eat them for snacks..or
rehydrate and make a pie or cobbler...What's in store for
tomorrow! I don't know
maybe it will be time to do laundry :o)

  1. I still wonder if you can dry them in the oven...My Daughter would love a bag of dried fruit for snacks and wouldn't cost much to ship them when their dried. I had a dehydrator for many years and quit using it so gave it to my son...He does use it so I guess I will just have to request one for Christmas this year :)
My DH would like the fruit for snacks too. I just bought a box of dried fruit at Walgreens today to ship to daughter that is now living in Chicago..she loves it there but not for me.

  3. Mother, please save some energy for your visit to Kentucky...Your family expects you to cook!!!
I hope you didn't think you were off the hook "just cause" you will be at my house??
I'm not one to ask for special favors but.... If you would like to make your pasta medley I could manage a small bite or two, OR, you could fry up some fish OR make your famous chicken and dumplings.
I won't even mention the bitter greens and fried corn bread.
Your poor grandchildren "Lord have Mercy" I know they haven't had a decent meal since their last visit to Grandma's house.
Well, enough said just follow your conscience..
In the mean time, don't work so hard
We are very excited that you are coming.
    xxoo

  6. Daisy, gadgets are half the fun of cooking for me :o)
It's like having the right tool to do the job...even pots are favorites of mine..especially the old fashioned iron ones>They are the best cooking utencils that have ever been made..(in my opinion!! Ginny

  8. I've never tried drying produce, Miss Ginny. It's good we have you to show us these things! If you don't mind my asking, how do you store them after they're dry, and how long do they last? (I mean how long WOULD they last if they weren't so tempting? ;0)

  9. Ladydi,I would store them in a large glass jar with a closed lid (I've had to do that many times, thinking that would fit or I had enough)..
Lasting, It would last as at least a year or more...Only do as much as your family would eat up, I'm sure supply and demand will teach you that...In winter I make a lot of soup...so I won't have too many tomatoes.
    frozen,dried, or canned...;o)Ginny
