Saturday's Cobbler and Part of Sunday's Dinner :o)

This is Saturday's Pear and Apple Cobbler.
This time I used my head and made it in a larger pan, it was just juicy enough, next time less sugar in the middle, but the Crust is just the way Cecil likes it...Crispy and Sweet< doesn't that sound like a description of me :o)
Here's Cecil showing the size of the Rutabaga and greens while I take the picture
It felt real good to be able to go to the garden and pick a meal for Sunday's dinner.
It was time to pick that Rutabaga and I'm glad I didn't have to  shoot Cecil in the foot, he has had a taste for them for the last two weeks. I've still got a little Country ham to use as seasoning, so we both will be happy campers!

I wanted you to see all the dirt on the bottom and how large this one grew, the leaves in the sink are from it and I snapped a couple more from the others to make a good sized meal. Next year we will
certainly grow more of them. This is the first time we have grown Rutabaga also. I know I don't have to say how proud we are,and blessed, our cup is truly running over.

The Photo on the Right is showing the
Rutabaga cut..the dirt part goes to the compost the rest will be sliced, diced, boiled and I'm hoping to add my own "homemade butter" :o) I'se a Farmer...

Hi Ginny, crispy and sweet, yes that is you! LOL. I have never tried rutabagas, but they look like turnips, and that is usually how my mom fixed turnips. I never liked them cooked, but they were wonderful raw. Do they taste similiar? Blessings,Kathleen

Hi ya Kathleen, Rutabaga is like a turnip, but has a more distinctive taste (and they have a yellowish color)...I peel, cube, and boil them. When they are soft like a potato (for mashed potatoes), I drain them, add butter, salt and black pepper to taste. You can leave them in quarters also and sometime add a few to the Rutabaga greens, some cornbread and your good to go.

Ginny, that's a good looking rutabaga! Your apple and pear cobbler looks scrumptious. I bet it was delicious. Yes, crispy and sweet do sound like good words to describe you! HA! :D

Daisy, that Rutabaga was the tastiest yet! and the Cobbler went straight to my hips :o) Cecil says I'm the greatest cook in the world and that today's dinner was the best he has ever had (he said the same thing yesterday :o) He just loves to eat. Guess we both do!:o
Next year more Rutabaga for sure, the leaves were as tender as a well cooked Collard. Yum! Ginny

Hi GInny, that dessert looked delicious - maybe trade some pecans for a slice? I've never tried rutabaga, but if they are anything like a sweet potato then I would like them for sure. Also checked out the previous post about your side garden and it ewas mightly impressive. Our garden is done for this season, but we have a small greenhouse and this will be the first year to try growing some winter veggies.

It all looks good Ginny! I'll be glad when I can harvest my rutabagas; they still have to grow a little more. I opened a jar of my canned pears this afternoon and made a topping of flour, brown sugar, oatmeal and some melted butter and cinnamon. It made the whole house smell good while it was baking.

Hi Beatrice, thanks for visiting again. For some Pecans I'll give you two big slices:o) I use them for cakes, wish I lived close I'd rake up your yard! When you have fresh Rutabaga (cooked especially the same day picked) they are the most delicious you would ever want..We won't be without them in the Garden ever again. Hubby has been praising me all day (I've been grinning like a cheshire cat all day. I don't think he would leave here even for a skinny young woman :o) until all the food is gone :o). Ginny

Mama bug, I know what you mean about the dessert smelling the house up . It's such a good feeling. Life can be good when you can open a jar of food knowing where it came from and how it was prepared. It's truly a blessing and I've been having my own worship service in the house all day.Every time I thought about my cup running over, I'd stop and say "Thank you Lord"
It kept the demons out today,I didn't have to tell hubby off once :o)..Ginny
